We consider the Purple Hybrid to be around a 6 to 8, which puts it between a “medium” and a “firm.” Our ratings are from the perspective of a person with moderate body weight. The interesting thing with Purple Hybrid is that it has a very similar construction to the Purple foam mattress, but it’s firmer. The addition of wrapped, pocketed coils also helps encourage airflow circulation. Also, thanks to its wide grid pattern, it grants you an abundance of airflow - far more than with the average foam mattress. The two to four inches of GelFlex provide all of the comfort for this mattress, regardless of model or style. Share on Pinterest The Purple Hybrid is very responsive. While you won’t really feel the CertiPUR-US certified foam – by not feeling the individual coils, you’ll know that the foam layer is doing its job. It’s there so sleepers don’t feel the compressed coils beneath the main comfort layer while they lay in bed. So, the coils are there for support and increased airflow, but why would Purple keep the poly foam transition layer? In other words, even light and sensitive sleepers should be fine on Purple Hybrid. For people with a higher body weight, the coils may be a better choice too.īut with the addition of coils, does the bed allow motion to transfer about freely? Not really, actually.Īccording to all of our tests, Purple Hybrid does a darn good job of limiting cross-mattress motion since it uses pocketed coils rather than one giant innerspring unit. If you were concerned that the regular purple mattress didn’t offer enough support, the hybrid’s coils will better hold your weight. In short, the Purple Hybrid is basically the Purple Mattress with coils. What’s the difference between Purple foam and Purple hybrid mattresses? That ensures that the bed is free of certain harmful metals and chemicals. In terms of certifications, the bed has the CertiPUR-US certification that’s considered a must-have for any bed that uses poly foam. Of course, if you opt for the hybrid mattress, one of the foam layers is swapped out for a layer of wrapped coils, and the remaining foam layers are thinner. The dense poly foam acts as your primary support layer, while the middle layer is just a transitional piece of foam, so you don’t feel the support core. The comfort foam layers of the mattress are really common seen with other online mattresses, whether it’s Casper, Leesa, Tuft & Needle, or Nectar. Its grid shape allows for copious amounts of airflow, and it’s extremely responsive so that you’re never left feeling stuck in place.īeyond the GelFlex Grid layer, the Purple Mattress has two additional layers of comfort foam (the Purple Plus has three layers of comfort foam) as well as a “SoftFlex” knitted cover made of viscose, polyester, and Lycra. The material itself feels like gel or silicone and somehow manages to be almost soft and firm at the same time. It is available in several different sizes, and depending on which mattress you buy, it will include a layer that’s either two, three, or four inches thick. The GelFlex Grid is not at all like what you’re used to seeing on a mattress. It’s basically a giant grid made of a gel-like material. You can think of the GelFlex Grid as a blown-up version of a Dr. Share on Pinterest Small version of the Hyper-Elastic Polymer. So if you’re feeling like Goldilocks with beds that are just too soft or too hard, Purple mattresses may be the “just right” match for you. Someone on macupdate recommended securityspread's ratings of Mac AV (free and commercial) whose results ( ) are updated every three months ( ) so you can compare AV products over time. They liked it, said it caught 94% of selected samples, but only 53% of pre-installed malware (which they nevertheless called "one of the better solutions"): Only 51 percent of the antivirus scanners detected the malware samples found in the past year on the first day of the study.Ī year ago Macworld UK reviewed ESET. The malware that Lastline Labs dubbed "least likely to be detected" indeed went undetected by the majority of antivirus scanners for months, or was never detected at all. After two months, one third of the antivirus scanners still failed to detect many of the malware samples. According to the study's results ( ), most of the newly detected malware went undetected by nearly half of the antivirus vendors. This means that if you click a malicious link or open an attachment in one of these emails, there is less than a one-in-five chance your antivirus software will detect it as bad." Last year Lastline Labs surveyed 47 vendors' AV programs against a variety of malware. ![]() The average detection rate for these samples was 24.47 percent, while the median detection rate was just 19 percent. In 2012 the security researcher Brian Krebs found that what is " noticeable is the lack of antivirus detection on most of these password stealing and remote control Trojans. There is a question about the general effectiveness of AV software in general, especially in the Windows world. (For example, as I noted above, that survey found that Clamxav caught 136 out of 188 pieces of malware, falling in the middle of the pack tested, but three months later its updated definitions would have resulted in its catching 100%.) The survey done a year ago by TheSafeMac ( ) might be of interest, but things move fast in the AV world, so the results are probably out of date. The last time I downloaded something which was designated as Mac malware was probably when I was running OS8, although I have had colleagues who have inadvertently sent me attachments that contained Windows malware. ClamXav has found Windows malware embedded in files that I've downloaded, and therefore been able to make sure I do not pass along to Windows users. * ClamXav only catches ~72% of malware, but author states it was because of issues picking up new signatures which supposedly is fixed now according to the ClamXav forums.Įither way, I'm just trying to prevent myself from forwarding emails/attachments with malware to Windows users. * ClamXav catches ~39% of malware, according to them. I just hope the few reviews out there saying ClamXav doesn't catch most malware aren't 100% true. Sophos is nice, but on my older non-retina MBP it felt sluggish even with a Intel SSD/8GB RAM. I thought about VirusBarrier, but to pay $40/year just to monitor my email/downloads folder is too much especially with my strict, safe, computing practices. That said, since this is my main home computer, I don't really need major AV software. $23 is a not a bad deal especially when you factor in 6-7 years of free usage on my part. You can only scan folders via scheduling or manually, which pushed me to buy the commercial copy. ![]() I tried the App Store version, which runs on Yosemite despite being last updated Aug 2014, but it's missing the Sentry real-time monitoring feature (Apple/MAS limitation?). I just pulled the trigger on the paid version of ClamXav. |
